Group Visits

The Vale of Rheidol Railway is a firm favourite with coach groups. Photo: John R Jones

The Vale of Rheidol Railway operates regular services from February through to the end of November. With a journey time of one hour from one end of the line to the other and a round trip of approximately 2 ½ to 3 hours, it is the perfect day out for coach tours. We were proud winners of the Coach Friendly Heritage Railway of the year award in the National Coach Tourism Awards. We were finalists in 2015 and 2017.

Whether you are a small club or society looking for a day out or a tour operator looking for steam train excursions as part of a repeat holiday programme, we can find an itinerary which works for you.

The steam train takes visitors on a journey through some of the most spectacular scenery in Wales.

Information for Tour Planners and Group Travel Organisers

Planning a group visit

Please see the timetable page of the website for operating dates and departure times. We also produce a printed timetable brochure with this information in. If there is no services advertised on your chosen day, it may be possible to charter your own private train.

For tour groups and excursions we would recommend starting your journey from either Aberystwyth or Devil's Bridge stations as both have free parking for coaches. You can do either a single journey or a return journey. If you are a group leader or group travel organiser and require assistance planning an itinerary, please telephone our Booking Office on 01970 625819 and one of our staff will be able to discuss the various options with you.

Group Fares - Reduced fares apply for pre-booked groups of 15 or more paying visitors. The best value group tickets are available in the shoulders of the season. In order to secure our preferential party rates, a non-returnable deposit of £50 is required to secure the booking (unless full advance payment is made 10 days before departure.) Once this is done, a portion of the train will be reserved for your party.

We may be able to arrange a slightly more favourable rate for operators regularly bringing multiple groups. This has to be agreed in advance with the railway.

Party fares are as follows:

Prior to travel, groups must have paid in advance or have means of payment on the day of travel this can be by cash, card or a business cheque. We accept all major debit / credit cards. The group must submit one total payment at the Booking Office counter and, not pay as individuals. For simplicity a single group ticket will cover all passengers. We can provide individual tickets for groups if requested.

In the run up to your visit, a member of our booking office staff will be in contact in order to establish approximate numbers in the group. We know numbers can change at relatively short notice and will only charge you for the number of passengers who travel.

Accessibility

The railway uses a fleet of vintage carriages, access to which is via a lateral step from the platform onto the carriage 'running board' and another step from the running board into the carriage. A portable access step is also available. All doors on enclosed carriages are fitted with grab handles. At present there is no ramped access available owing to the narrow doors. Please see the accessibility section of the website for a comprehensive description of the facilities. Folded wheelchairs and walkers can be conveyed in the guards van. Comprehensive details can be found in our accessibility statement.

Contact information

To book a group please contact our main Aberystwyth Booking Office on 01970 625819. One of our team will be able to assist.

Information for coach drivers and couriers

On the day of your visit

Finding the railway is easy. We have worked closely with our local authority to provide a comprehensive brown sign scheme from all approaches. Follow the steam train symbols. We have recently expanded our parking facilities at Aberystwyth. This is monitored by railway staff. At Aberystwyth, avoid signs for the mainline railway station as this is separate to us.

On arrival at Aberystwyth , coaches can use our dedicated car park in Park Avenue, SY23 1PG. Signage in the car park directs coaches to the right where there is room to park up and unload your passengers. Coaches can remain parked there after unloading and there is no charge to use this facility. There is additional parking nearby in the Ceredigion Council operated Coach Park on Boulevard St Brieuc however a charge may apply.

On arrival at Devil's Bridge , SY23 3JL, we recommend coaches reverse into the station yard where you can unload your passengers. Whilst a small charge applies for cars, there is no charge for coaches to park.

Arrival - We advise all parties to arrive no later than 30 minutes before train departure time. Organisers/couriers should obtain their group ticket before boarding the train and railway staff will direct passengers to the reserved seats. These will be indicated by a reservation board on the side of the carriage. The party must have made payment before the train departs unless otherwise agreed beforehand with the railway.

Visitor facilities

Both Aberystwyth and Devil's Bridge stations have shops stocking a range of souvenirs, books and gifts including our popular postcards (and stamps), fridge magnets and tea towels. Aberystwyth shop carries a small range of sandwiches and confectionery including Welsh Cakes and Bara Brith. Refreshments can be arranged at prior notice. Please contact the booking office for details.

The Two Hoots Tea Room at Devil's Bridge station is independent from the railway. It serves a range of drinks, snacks and light refreshments. They can provide a set luncheon or buffet option with prior notice.

Toilet facilities

We have toilet facilities at both Aberystwyth and Devil's Bridge stations however there are no on-board lavatories in our carriages.

On board welcome and bespoke tours

We can provide an on train welcome for your group once everyone is aboard and the train is always waved off by our Booking Office staff. Specialist tours including visits to our engineering workshop and bespoke tours including hosted groups with a on train guide are available. Please contact the Booking Office for a quote.

Facilities for drivers

The railway offers complimentary travel for coach drivers and tour managers / couriers. Drivers are welcome to a hot drink on arrival.

Changes to service

The railway will do all it can to ensure that the trains run as advertised. On rare occasions, steam locomotives may be replaced by diesel locomotives and train timings adjusted. Our line controller will liaise with group organisers to ensure they are kept informed of the circumstances.
